Wisconsin DNR disagrees with tribal claim
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has rejected an effort by the state’s Chippewa Indian tribes to prevent wolf hunting in the northern part of the state during the upcoming season for the predator. The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission contends treaty rights allow them to lay claim on all wolves—a species they consider sacred—in a swath of northern Wisconsin, but DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp said the agency “respectfully disagree(s) with the tribal claim.” AP.
