Ice Fishing Big Lake Superior Rainbow Trout

The water became pretty cloudy with last week’s warmer temperatures creating melting and runoff. This week has been back below freezing so it has started to clear up some as the silt settles and a few more fish are starting to show up. This fat beast fought hard and long but eventually fell victim to my gaff and meat stick.

It’s April 18th and the ice is still holding up well. I think this is the latest I have ever ice fished on this lake and I’m not complaining. The rivers will be running with fish soon enough.

Glass Beads

I recently bought some glass beads at the local craft store and find they look great on my small flies. I use the size 11/0 beads for tying on #16 and #18 hooks and they seem to slide on perfectly and add a nice highlight of color (and a bit of weight) to the head of the fly. And they catch fish. These will work great for hot spots on scuds and other nymphs and wet flies as well. Use one (or more) for a thorax and pair it up with some clear cure goo…now you’re in business.
